EDEN EC meeting in Rome, Italy 21-22 February 2019

EDEN Executive Committee meeting took place in Rome, Italy 21-22 February 2019, hosted by University Roma III. Besides the usual items on the agenda as,  minutes from the last meeting, financing, next conferences, Fellowships etc. we dedicated time to work on strategic discussions for EDEN future! Each EC member had been asked to provide SWOT analyses in advance, and then we had a "Tour the Table", and a common SWOT was finally created. We planned to continue our good actions and we agreed and was excited about new initiatives. One of the other important items on the agenda was on How to deal with Brexit. It has been a long process prior to this meeting, at our online meetings during the year, especially since autumn and a  special working group together with EDEN Secretariat had prepared different scenarios, and a process forward. It is a really complex problem for a European Association as ours, as we are depending Operational Grants from the European Commission. 

As always great discussions and an open professional and personal atmosphere. EDEN is like a family, just love it. Since June 2018 in Genova, I am on my second period in the EDEN Executive Committee. Besides being an EDEN Fellow (since 2014) and EDEN Council of Fellows (since 2018), I am Chairing the EDEN SIG on TEL and Quality Enhancement, follow us at LinkedIn.

Our next upcoming event from EDEN is the annual Open Education Week, #OEWeek  4-6 March 2019, where we host webinars every day during the week. On Thursday 7 March 2109 I will give a presentation at the webinar on OER Quality Assessment. The event next to that is the EDEN Annual Conference in Bruges, Belgium., Connecting through Educational Technology 16-19 June 2019.

EDEN2018 in Genoa, Italy 17-20 June 2018

The theme of EDEN2018 was on Exploring the micro, meso, and macro level. Navigation between dimensions in the digital learning landscape. 

The conference was hosted by Faculty of Political Science of the University of Genoa, Italy.

This year I had several presentations and it was  a busy week. The conference gathered some 300 participants from over 35 countries, with some 15 delegates from Sweden, which this year was the fourth largest country when it came to number of delegates. There were a lot of possibilities to network and to catch up with new and old friends and colleageus.

Expert workshop on Pursuing a demand-led strategy for promoting online training among European SMEs. and the initiative Promoting Online Training Opportunities for the Workshop iEurope. Besides being an expert I am in the Steering Committe. During the workshop it was even pointed out that Sweden was in the forefront in promoting online training among European SMEs, so I had also to comment on that.

EDLW 2018 5-9 November 2018

This year EDEN was proudly hosting the third year of the European Distance Learning Week (EDLW) in cooperation with the United States Distance Learning Association (USDLA), which was holding its National Distance Learning Week (NDLW) in parallel with the EDEN event. During EDLW, daily online webinars and panel sessions of expert scholars and practitioners were presented with a variety of cutting-edge open and online learning topics, from innovations in design to open educational research. Each day during the EDLW, a webinar was presented with interesting themes and professional presenters. See the themes and the recordings as below. I myself hosted a webinar on the 8 November 2018 on Considerations for Quality Assurance of e-Learning Provision. In addition, I moderated and presented myself. The webinar was in three parts.

Esther Huertas Hidalgo, AQU Catalunya, Spain, The European Association for Quality Assurance in Higher Education (ENQA) presented the ENQA Considerations for Quality Assurance of e-Learning Provision, and the TeSLA project on e-assessment.




The webinar had some 50 registered participants and it was a lively discussion on quality considerations and how EDEN can contribute both internal and external to the changing quality agenda in the changing learning landscape in the 21st century and how the use of TEL can facilitate and promote educational access, equity, and quality around the world, which are the Sustainability Goals related to education (SDG4). The ENQA Quality considerations are based on the ENQA European Standards and Guidelines and the European Association of Distance Teaching University (EADTU) Excellence Associates in Quality and the SEQUENT (Supporting Quality in E-learning European Networks) project.


Online training opportunities for the workforce in Europe

The Interim report Promoting online training opportunities for the workforce in Europe (2017-2019) was published 30 October 2018. The report of this new European initiative has been prepared for the Executive Agency for Small and Medium-sized Enterprises (EASME) and the Directorate-General for Internal Market, Industry, Entrepreneurship and SMEs (DG GROW) of the European Commission.


The work was carried out by PwC, EDEN (the European Distance and E-learning Network) and Espace Mendès France, together with an expert group. I have been involved as an expert and evaluator in the project, which is a very interesting and promising initiative. The report gives a deep overview of the field and addresses a number of recommendations.


Based on extensive desk-research, in-depth interviews with stakeholders and policymakers, two expert workshops and an online survey disseminated among practitioners and industry professionals all over Europe, the main barriers for European SMEs to adopt new online solutions were identified. The most prominent barriers proved to be related to a general lack of enterprise learning strategy, as well as a lack of awareness of relevant online training solutions by employers and employees. The key measures at the EU and national levels that were suggested for tackling the abovementioned barriers refer to developing better coordination and mechanisms that would offer information on the opportunities and benefits of online training solutions for SMEs, good practice examples, as well as an opportunity to share experiences with trusted third parties and peers. It is also necessary to strengthen communities of practice for enterprises engaged or considering engaging in online training, where good practices and experiences can be exchanged by enterprises themselves.

One of the key conclusions is that existing policies and programmes have been mainly supply-oriented and mostly led by the academic sector, while there is now a clear need for more demand-based and industry-led initiatives. The latter implies initiatives aiming at providing enterprises and SMEs with much better solutions, information, and guidance and at increasing their interest, benefits, and motivation to use new and relevant online training platforms.

Open Education Week 2019

This week is the annual Open Education Week, OEW2109. Open education encompasses resources, tools, and practices that employ a framework of open sharing to improve educational access and effectiveness worldwide. Founded in 2013 by the Open Education Consortium, the goal of Open Education Week is to raise awareness and showcase the impact of open education on teaching and learning worldwide. Open Education Week has become one of the most foremost global events recognizing high achievement and excellence in open education. The week-long event spotlights amazing work from over a dozen categories including live, face-to-face events, webinars, projects, and resources. The Best-of-the-Best participate in Open Education Week.

 I myself contributed with two presentations, one on the 6th March on behalf of the ICDE OER Advocacy Committee on OER and the SDG4 for access, equity, equality, inclusiveness, quality, and lifelong learning and OER and the SDG4 for access, equity, equality, inclusiveness, quality, and lifelong learning.
